First Time Coming to Ridgewood, New York – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY
Ridgewood began as part of the Dutch settlement Boswijk, or Bushwick, and was incorporated later into the village of Breuckelen, now Brooklyn. Onderdonk House, erected in 1709, is a lasting landmark of this legacy, and is the oldest Dutch Colonial stone house in New York City. Found on the property is Arbitration Rock, a disputed boundary marker between Bushwick and Newtown, or essentially Brooklyn and Queens.

First farmed and settled by the Dutch in the 18th and 19th centuries, it was the next wave of English settlers that named Ridgewood due to the area’s green and hilly landscape. Development of public transportation of horse-drawn cars or trolleys and elevated trains caused a steady increase in residential and retail development. Most homes, between 1905 and 1915, were used to house German immigrants working in the breweries and knitting factories at the Queens-Brooklyn border. After World War I, there was an influx of Gottscheers, an ethnic German population from Slovenia, dislocated towards the end of World War I. Later the Irish came in, followed shortly thereafter by Italians.

TODAY
Ridgewood is a neighborhood in the Queens, New York City borough bordering the neighborhoods of Maspeth, Glendale, and Middle Village, in addition to Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bushwick and East Williamsburg. Historically, it has straddled the Queens-Brooklyn boundary, and the neighborhood is part of Queens Community Board 5.

Ridgewood has housing types ranging from six-family buildings close to the Brooklyn border to two-family and single-family row houses further into Queens, and is a densely settled neighborhood. Ridgewood is distinguishable from Bushwick by the wide use of exposed brick construction, yet in Brooklyn, vinyl siding is more prevalent. Nearly all buildings in Ridgewood and Bushwick are classified as combustible.

Ridgewood is home to Ridgewood Savings Bank, the biggest mutual savings bank in New York State, with headquarters at the intersection of Myrtle and Forest Avenues, built in 1929.

PRIME LOCATION
Most of the neighborhood covers a large hill which is part of the glacial moraine that created Long Island, starting at Metropolitan Avenue with a steep rise of about two blocks, then mildly sloping down again. Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish is a location where one can really notice the steepness of the incline. The entrance of the Church at street level on 60th Place is just about level with the second floor of the next door Parish school.

QUALITY OF LIFE
The M train runs through the center of Ridgewood, and it connects to the L train at Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenues at the southern end. Grover Cleveland High School is the sole high school in Ridgewood, zoned to most of Ridgewood. There has been intent debate as to whether this high school, and a number of other schools, should be closed because of low scores and gang violence. However, it is still the only public high school in the neighborhood.

Ridgewood Park was home to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms, which later became the Brooklyn Dodgers and now currently the New York City Dodgers, for Sunday games from 1886 to 1889. Notable residents of Ridgewood include James Cagney, Jeannie Ortega, Ron Eldard, and Harry Houdini.
