First Time Coming to Queens, New York – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY
Dutch and English settlers made up the European colonization in what was part of the New Netherlands colony. First settlements were in 1635, followed by early colonizations at Maspeth in 1642, and Vlissingen (now Flushing) in 1643. Newtown (now Elmhurst) and Jamaica were also new settlements. However, they were mostly inhabited by English settlers from New England who were subject to Dutch law. In 1664, the area (and all of Long Island) became known as Yorkshire after the capture of the colony by the English.

The Flushing Remonstrance signed by colonists in 1657 is considered a precursor to the United States Constitution’s provision on freedom of religion in the Bill of Rights. The signers protested the Dutch colonial authorities’ persecution of Quakers in what is today the borough of Queens.

Queens County was one of twelve original counties of New York State, created on November 1, 1683. It is believed that the name was for Catherine of Braganza, queen of England at that time. Queens acquired some other islands in Long Island Sound not already assigned to a county.

TODAY
Queens is the largest and easternmost of the five boroughs of New York City, the second-largest in population. The borough of Queens is the fourth-most densely populated county in the United States, sitting on the west end of Long Island. As the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world, it has a population of over 2.2 million, representing over 100 different nations and speaking over 138 different languages.

Home to two of the three major New York City area airports, Queens is host to JFK International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, among the busiest airports in the world. Its airspace is the most congested in the country. Queens has attractions like Flushing Meadows Park—where the New York Mets baseball team and the US Open tennis tournament plays—Silvercup Studios, Kaufman Astoria Studios, and Aqueduct Racetrack.

PRIME LOCATION
Queens takes up the far west section of Long Island and includes smaller islands, most found in Jamaica Bay. They form part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, one of the National Parks of New York Harbor.

Brooklyn is the only other New York City borough on Long Island, just south and west of Queens. The Newtown Creek estuary flows into the East River, forming a portion of the border. The East River is to the west and north, and has Manhattan on the other side to the west and The Bronx to the north. East of Queens, on Long Island, is Nassau County. Staten Island shares only a 3-mile-long water border with Queens, southwest of Brooklyn.

The Rockaway Peninsula, is the most southern part of all of Long Island. It lay between Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, and has some of the most prominent public beaches in Queens.

QUALITY OF LIFE
Major artistic movements have not necessarily centered here, but Queens has been home to such notable artists as Francis Ford Coppola, Paul Simon, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Paolo Javier is the current poet laureate of Queens.

Notably, the Afrikan Poetry Theatre and the Black Spectrum Theater Company have fostered African-American culture in Queens. In the 1940s, Queens was an important center of jazz. Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, and Ella Fitzgerald all lived in Queens, to avoid the segregation they found other places in New York. Some big hip-hop acts come from Queens, like Nas, Run-D.M.C., Kool G Rap, A Tribe Called Quest, LL Cool J, Mobb Deep, 50 Cent, and Nicki Minaj.
