First Time Coming to Whitestone, New York – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY
Limestone that was found on the shore of the river caused Dutch settlers to name the town Whitestone, according to popular tradition. The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record have 17th century wills and deeds that refer to “the white stone” as a local landmark and survey reference point. Whitestone was built on white limestone. The area was part of the estate of Francis Lewis who was a delegate to the Continental Congress and also signed the Declaration of Independence. An English raid during the Revolutionary War also occurred here. Lewis’ wife was taken prisoner and the house was burned to the ground.

Future development followed the building of the Bronx Whitestone Bridge in 1939. The bridge is 2,300 feet, and was the fourth longest bridge anywhere when it was constructed.
