First Time Coming to Manhattan, New York – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY
The three-day long New York Draft Riots of 1863, were one of the worst incidents of civil disorder in American history, that massacred an estimated 119 participants during the American Civil War. Strong commercial ties to the American South, the area’s growing immigrant population, anger regarding conscription and resentment at some who could afford to pay $300 to avoid service, all led to resentment against Lincoln’s war policies, culminating in the event.

After the Civil War, the rate of European immigration increased and New York became the first stop for millions desiring a new life in the United States. The French acknowledged this by dedicating a gift of the Statue of Liberty on October 28, 1886. But the new European immigration brought more social upheaval, with the city tenements packed with poorly paid laborers from dozens of nations, causing the city to become a hotbed of revolution, syndicalism, racketeering, and unionization.

The Brooklyn Bridge opened in 1883, establishing a road connection across the East River.

TODAY
One of the five boroughs of New York City, Manhattan is the geographically smallest but most densely populated in the city, located mainly on the island of Manhattan at the mouth of the Hudson River. It consists of Manhattan Island and the small adjacent islands of Roosevelt Island, Randall’s Island, Wards Island, Governors Island, Liberty Island, part of Ellis Island, Mill Rock, and U Thant Island; as well as Marble Hill, a little area on the mainland that borders the Bronx.

This area of New York County is the most densely populated in the United States , and the entire world, with a 2010 population of 1,585,873 living in a land area of 22.96 square miles. With a per capita income of over $100,000 in 2005, it is also one of the wealthiest counties in the United States. Manhattan is the third-largest of New York’s five boroughs. Manhattan is described as the economic and cultural center of the United States. It is home to the United Nations Headquarters, and to Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, functioning as one of the financial capitals of the world with a GDP of over $1.2 trillion.

The Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village was the catalyst for the modern gay rights movement. Manhattan is also home to colleges and universities like Columbia University, New York University, and Rockefeller University.

PRIME LOCATION
Much of Manhattan is underlined with a mica schist bedrock known as Manhattan Schist. It is a strong metamorphic rock well suited for the foundations of tall buildings. Two large concentrations of skyscrapers on the island are in Downtown and Midtown, where the formation is closest to the surface. In Central Park, outcrops of Manhattan Schist occur, Rat Rock being one large example.

Manhattan is loosely divided into Downtown (Lower Manhattan), Midtown (Midtown Manhattan), and Uptown (Upper Manhattan), with Manhattan’s east and west sides divided by Fifth Avenue.

QUALITY OF LIFE
With some of the nation’s most valuable real estate, Manhattan has a reputation as one of the most expensive areas in the United States. In 2012, the New York Times reported that “the income gap in Manhattan, already wider than almost anywhere else in the country, rivaled disparities in sub-Saharan Africa. … The wealthiest fifth of Manhattanites made more than 40 times what the lowest fifth reported, a widening gap (it was 38 times, the year before) surpassed by only a few developing countries, including Namibia and Sierra Leone.”

The downtown neighborhood of Chelsea is widely known for its galleries and cultural events, housing more than 200 art galleries that holds modern art from both upcoming and established artists.

Often considered the highest professional forms of theatre in the United States, Broadway plays and musicals are staged in 39 large professional theatres with at least 500 seats, almost all in and around Times Square. Off-Broadway theaters there feature productions in venues with 100–500 seats. A little more than a mile from Times Square is the Lincoln Center, with one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses, the Metropolitan Opera.
