First Time Coming to Forest Hills, New York – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY
The area was first called Whitepot, and it has historically been a Jewish residence. In 1895, the adjacent Forest Park became developed.

Brooklyn attorney Cord Meyer bought the abutting land in 1906, made up of six farms. He then renamed it Forest Hills, consisting of 600 aggregated acres. In 1909, Margaret Sage purchased 142 acres of land from the Cord Meyer Development Company, and stated a plan to construct good low-income housing and improve the living conditions of the working poor there, but the unfortunate huge property values made the plan totally impractical. Later, Atterbury, a successful architect, was given commission to design Forest Hills Gardens, a neighborhood planned to model garden communities of England. This resulted in many Tudor-style homes in Forest Hills.

Forest Hills is the home setting for the fictional comic book character, Peter Parker, in Spider-Man.

There are two monuments in Forest Hills Gardens, one pays tribute to victims of World War I, and the other, the mast of the Columbia, which won the America’s Cup yacht races in both 1899 and 1901.

TODAY
Forest Hills is now an upper middle class neighborhood in the Queens, New York City borough. Mostly upper-middle class, the wealthiest often have homes in the Forest Hills Gardens section.

The U.S. Open tennis tournament once made its home here, held at the West Side Tennis Club before moving to the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, four miles away. When played at this stadium, the tournament was usually just referred to as Forest Hills, just like the All-England Lawn Tennis Association Championships were simply referred to as Wimbledon. In 2001, the motion picture The Royal Tenenbaums, Luke Wilson’s character plays a tennis match held at West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills. Alfred Hitchcock’s 1951 film Strangers on a Train, also had a pivotal scene where the main character was a professional tennis player, featuring a lengthy championship game there at the Club, with many shots of the surrounding area.

PRIME LOCATION
Named “Best Community” in 2007 by Cottage Living Magazine, Forest Hills Gardens is quite charming. The close by Van Court community also has many detached single-family homes, as well as attached townhouses near the Westside Tennis Center along with detached frame houses near Metropolitan Avenue. Finally, the community has many apartment buildings scattered throughout, most notably, the high-rise apartment buildings like The Continental on 108th St, Kennedy House, the Pinnacle, and the Windsor. Since the late 1990s, the Bukharian Jewish community pushed for bigger homes needed for large extended families.

QUALITY OF LIFE
The American branch of the Jewish charity World ORT operates the undergraduate college called Bramson ORT, with its main campus is in Forest Hills, and a satellite campus in Brooklyn. Also with a branch in the area is Touro College/NYSCAS.

Two of the largest parks in Queens, managed by the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, border Forest Hills. They are the 1,255 acre Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, which hosted two World’s Fairs including the iconic Unisphere, and the 544 acre Forest Park. Also in Forest Hills, are some very popular parks and playgrounds like Yellowstone Municipal Park – Katzman Playground, te Annandale Playground, the Willow Lake Playground, the Ehrenreich-Austin Playground and the Russell Sage Playground.
